wall that healsExhibit is free to attend

– The Wall That Heals Vietnam memorial is coming to San Luis Obispo, California from March 16 – March 19 at the Alex Madonna Expo Center.

This exhibit, hosted by the County of San Luis Obispo Veteran Services Office and the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum, in partnership with the Madonna Inn, is bringing the official three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Washington, D.C. and mobile education center to San Luis Obispo.

The exhibit is free to attend, and parking is free as well. It will be open 24 hours Thursday, March 16 through 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19 at Madonna Meadows, located at 120 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo.

The exhibit offers a somber and reflective environment and honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. armed forces in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

The San Luis Obispo Planning Committee is still seeking over 100 volunteers to sign-up for onsite shifts, assisting visitors while the exhibit is open to the public 24 hours. Sign up online if you are interested in volunteering at this event. No experience is needed, training will be provided.

“We welcome all veterans of the Central Coast and Central Valley regions of California to take the time to visit, reflect, and pay respect,” said County of San Luis Obispo’s Veterans Services Officer Morgan Boyd.

“This important event serves our museum’s mission, to remember and educate,” said Bart Topham, President/Director of the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum and a Vietnam combat veteran. “We are immensely proud to join the VSO in bringing The Wall That Heals to the Central Coast. We look forward to gathering at the event with veterans and visitors from San Luis Obispo County and throughout California.”

Accompanying The Wall That Heals is the Mobile Education Center presenting multimedia exhibits honoring and educating about the history surrounding the Vietnam War and photo tributes honoring veterans whose names are on the wall, including the following:

  • Hometown Heroes – Honoring service members whose names are on The Wall from San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Monterey counties.
  • In Memory Honor Roll – Honoring Vietnam veterans from California who returned home from the war, but have since passed away. To submit your loved one’s photo, learn more at https://www.vvmf.org/Honor-Roll/.
