Things you should know about this year’s Super Bowl MVP nominees

There are so many Super Bowl predictions out in the world as we edge closer to Super Bowl LVI, taking place on the 14th of February, 2023. Who will take MVP is one of the discussion topics, with many names coming up.

What is a Super Bowl MVP?

The Super Bowl MVP is the most valuable player of the Super Bowl game. The MVP is chosen by a panel of 16 NFL writers and broadcasters who make up 80% of the vote. The remaining 20% is voted by the fans through an online portal.

The award was started in 1967 and is done every year after the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady has won the most MVP awards, having won 5 over the years.

4 Things you need to know about the MVP award

  • Quarterbacks often win the award, with the prize going to 31 of them over the years.
  • Since 2001, fans can now vote online and contribute 20% of the votes.
  • The MVP award has been won by the winning team, except in 1971 when Chuck Howley won, despite his team having lost.
  • Only three players in history have won back-to-back MVP awards.

Here are some of the MVP winner predictions and things you should know about them:

Aaron Donald, defensive tackle, Los Angeles Rams

It’s not typical to see a defensive player take home MVP, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl, where the best of the best are battling it out. But Aaron Donald is the real deal. As one of the best pass rushers in NFL history, the Rams’ main defensive threat is already guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame. Should Donald get going, we could see a new record and a not-so-typical recipient of the award.

Joe Burrow, Quarterback, Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow has made it a habit of winning MVP in the championship game. He did it in 2019 in the SEC, Fiesta Bowl, and the 2019 National Championship game. The young quarterback comes alive on the biggest stages. Should the Bengals manage to go all the way to the Super Bowl LVI, it’ll be thanks to their young QB.

The thing standing in Burrow’s way is the offensive team at the Bengals. They are currently rated one of the worst. Time will tell if Burrow’s arm will be enough to take the Bengals all the way.

Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are the favorites to win Super Bowl LVI. It’s logical to assume their quarterback is a shoo-in candidate for the MVP award. Should Stafford manage to throw 250 yards and the Rams win, he’ll likely have enough to take home MVP as well.

This is huge, considering where Matthew Stafford was just a year ago. He was at the Detroit Lions, trying to find a way to a team further up the table. While considering an offer from the Colts, Stafford decided on the Los Angeles Rams, where he fit right in. Should he win MVP in his first year with the Rams, it would be a great achievement for the young QB.

Ja’Marr Chase, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals rookie wide receiver has been nothing less than outstanding this season. And with Burrow supporting him, the WR has made some excellent catches and navigated through some tricky situations. Having delivered two 200-yard performances this season, in his rookie season, he would be a top candidate for MVP at the Super Bowl LVI.

Cooper Kupp, Wide Receiver, Los Angeles Rams

Kupp has been in record-breaking form this season, helping the Rams to stay at the top of the table. Supported by Stafford’s great arm, the wide receiver has led his team in nearly every major category with 145 receptions. Kupp is almost guaranteed to get 8 catches and 100 or more receiving yards in the Super Bowl. His coverage is something no other team can match.

Von Miller, Edge Rusher, Los Angeles Rams

Having already won an MVP award in the big game courtesy of a massive performance in the Super Bowl, Miller knows precisely what it takes to win the MVP award and will be set on winning it again.

The edge rusher is the first defensive player to win multiple Super Bowl MVP awards. If he can recreate the magic he showed a few years ago, you can be sure he’ll be in the running.
