–Thousands of local vegans, visitors, and their friends and families came out to the SLO Vegfest, held at the Veterans Memorial Hall in San Luis Obispo Saturday.

The event was put on by the Central Coast Vegan Network and included booths for nonprofits such as local animal sanctuaries Happy Hen Rescue, The Loving Farm, and Greener Pastures Farm Sanctuary, representation from local businesses such as Bliss Cafe and Kacey Cakes, Youtuber Debbie Chew, and even Ruby Roth, the author of a popular and groundbreaking vegan kids book series, recently seen on the Today Show.

The event was followed by an animal rights march, organized by Direct Action Everywhere. The march was the largest of it’s kind in San Luis Obispo history, according to 15-year-old activist and owner of Happy Hen Rescue Zoe Rooster. “We are calling on the city of San Luis Obispo to BAN the use of “humane” labels. Over and over again, we have found horrific conditions at certified “humane” farms. The public deserves the right to know,” Rooster posted on her Facebook. Rooster recently appeared on SLO Ted Talks, click here to watch her speech.
