Two escape uninjured after aircraft crash, fire in San Luis Obispo

SLO Regional Airport begins runway rehabilitation project

    SLO County Regional Airport.

    – At approximately 9:15 a.m. Friday morning, a single-engine Cirrus SR22 aircraft crashed at the San Luis Obispo County Airport. San Luis Obispo County Fire Department dispatched an aircraft emergency response, including Crash 21, a two-person staffed Aircraft Rescue Firefighting vehicle. Emergency personnel quickly suppressed the resulting fire and checked for injuries.

All individuals on board safely exited the aircraft. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The airport reopened for all arrivals and departures at 5 p.m. Friday.

“The safety of our community is always our highest priority, and I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the County airport staff, County Fire Department, ACI Jet, and all of the emergency personnel who responded swiftly and professionally to today’s incident,” said Dawn Ortiz-Legg, San Luis Obispo County Supervisor for District 4. “Their coordination and commitment to safety ensured a prompt and effective response. We are grateful for their service and dedication.”

“We are grateful for the swift and coordinated response from our airport staff and local emergency responders in managing today’s incident,” said Courtney Johnson, director of airports. “Thank you as well to our passengers and community for their patience and understanding. The airfield has been safely cleared and is ready to resume normal operations.”

“Thanks to the rapid response of our two personnel on Crash 21 and their aggressive attack on the fire, we were able to minimize impacts to the airport by keeping the fire from spreading to wings of the aircraft where fuel is stored,” said Ryan Grebe, public information officer for the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department. “I believe their timely actions as well as the positive working relationship we have with SBP airport staff helped ensure the safety of the two individuals on board and we are very thankful that this incident did not result in any injuries or worse for those involved.”
