Two injured in crash after trailer drops rocks on roadway

highway 46 accident
–Two San Luis Obispo County residents were injured after a collision that occurred Monday.

On Highway 41, three miles north of Highway 46 a truck and trailer accidentally dumped a lot of small rocks on the roadway due to a mechanical failure on a bottom dump gate of the trailer around 8:15 a.m. The aggregate covered the southbound lane and partially into the northbound lane.

As 60-year-old Arroyo Grande resident Brenda Kay Raymond was driving southbound she began to travel through the loose gravel and felt the vehicle begin to swerve. Raymond applied her brakes but this only caused her vehicle to lose even more traction. Raymond began to spin toward the northbound lane of Highway 41.

55-year-old Cayucos resident Frederick Beyer Lein was driving northbound on Highway 41 approaching Raymond and saw her sliding into his lane directly at him. Lein swerved to the left into the southbound lane to avoid a head-on collision. The right front and side of Lein’s vehicle collided with the left front of Raymond’s vehicle. This glancing blow sent Raymond’s vehicle off the east side of Highway 41 and down the embankment approximately 60 feet

Other vehicles prior to this collision were damaged by flying rock debris.

Both Raymond and Lein sustained minor injuries in the crash.
