UC Master Gardeners to present winter pruning workshop at Centennial Park

Program is free and open to the public

    – UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County will offer a free community workshop titled “Winter Pruning for Summer Success” on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Centennial Park in Paso Robles.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Live Oak Room at 600 Nickerson Drive, where the organization maintains a Demonstration Garden. The program is open to the public, and free registration is available through the group’s website. Organizers said preference will be given to those who pre-register.

The workshop will focus on practical pruning techniques for fruit trees, roses, and native plants. Trained volunteers will lead the session and explain how winter pruning supports healthy plant structure, spring growth, and summer blooms and fruit. Time will be provided for participants to ask questions about their home gardens.

Weather permitting, the Demonstration Garden will be open following the workshop, allowing attendees to view pruning examples, speak with volunteers, and gather tips for home landscapes.

The Centennial Park Demonstration Garden was developed through a partnership between the City of Paso Robles and the University of California Regents for the Master Gardener Program of San Luis Obispo County. The garden’s goals include demonstrating water conservation practices, helping home gardeners improve success, and donating food to a local food pantry.

The Demonstration Garden includes multiple garden plots designed to model low-water-use gardening. These areas include trees; grapes and berries; lawn alternatives; a kitchen garden; a curb appeal and pollinator garden; wildlife habitat; compost and roses; California natives; and a succulents and fire safety plot.

“These regular free workshops offer a special opportunity for home gardeners who have questions or want to learn more about gardening,” said Maria Murrietta, program coordinator for the Master Gardener Program of San Luis Obispo County.
