Unlicensed, 16-year-old driver critically injures pedestrian
–On Thursday, at approximately 12:40 p.m., the Paso Robles Police Department and Department of Emergency Services responded to an injury collision that occurred near Paso Robles and Liberty high schools. Callers to 911 reported a GMC Yukon had collided with a pedestrian.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located a 17-year-old girl who had been struck by a GMC Yukon. Paramedics rendered aid to the student and ultimately transported her to Twin Cities Community Hospital via ambulance. The student remains hospitalized for critical injuries.
Officers determined an unlicensed 16-year-old male student was responsible for the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the Yukon exit the high school parking lot and attempt to make a left (east) turn onto Niblick Road. According to witnesses, the driver accelerated at high speed and lost control of his SUV as he crossed the street. The SUV left the roadway on the north side of Niblick, before striking a 17-year old female student walking on the sidewalk with her friend. The SUV continued over the sidewalk, into a garden area, before ultimately colliding with a utility control box.
The collision remains under investigation; however, neither drugs nor alcohol appears to be a factor. The Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, San Luis Ambulance, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Paso Robles Unified School District personnel all assisted with the investigation.
