Upcoming road work in San Luis Obispo to improve street safety

–Beginning July 15, the City of San Luis Obispo will kick off major construction and road resurfacing work on South Broad Street from Tank Farm Road to just beyond the regional airport to make streets safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Road improvements include Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pedestrian improvements and curb corner ramps and repaving of the road’s surface. Improvements to curbs and crossings will be done in July from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The repaving portion of this project will begin in August and will be done overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to minimize impacts to commuters who travel into and out of San Luis Obispo using Broad Street.

In addition to the roadway improvements, the project also includes roadway striping changes to improve safety for bicyclists while maintaining the same traffic lane configuration. These improvements include bike lane buffers and wider bike lanes.
This project implements the City’s Pavement Management Plan, a rotating and methodical approach to ensure all areas of the city receive regular maintenance. Additionally, this project makes progress toward the 2019-21 Major City Goal of sustainable transportation. Maintained roads help reduce wear-and-tear on vehicles, lead to improved gas mileage, and reduce the need for frequent tire replacement. The project is funded by the Local Revenue Measure, the city’s one-half percent sales tax that helps fund maintenance projects.

The project is expected to be completed in early October 2019, depending upon the weather. Road work information and “No Parking” signs will be posted 30 hours prior to work.
