–John Laird announced endorsements from four members of congress who represent portions of the 17th State Senate District, including Reps. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara), Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley), Anna Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) and Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose). In addition, former U.S. Reps. Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) and Sam Farr (D-Carmel) have also endorsed Mr. Laird.

Laird is running to represent the 17th State Senate District, which includes Paso Robles and all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz Counties, as well as coastal Monterey County and southern Santa Clara County. The 17th District is currently represented by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), who will be termed out in 2020. The primary will be held in March 2020, followed by the general election in November. The filing period closes at the end of 2019.

“Few leaders in California have a stronger track record on education issues than John Laird,” said Carbajal. “A product of parents who were teachers, and with experience as a university instructor, John knows how important it is to close the achievement gap, increase access to higher education and reduce student debt. I’m excited about the opportunity to partner with him on these issues.”

“John has what it takes to help California continue to lead the nation and the world in addressing environmental issues, especially climate change,” said Panetta. “From being a strong local elected advocate for the establishment of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to responding to California’s explosive wildfires to addressing water supply, John continuously demonstrates his knowledge of the issues and ability to find solutions.”

“John Laird will do a wonderful job in the State Senate,” said Lofgren. “He has the experience to know how to get things done, but also the character and dedication to focus on the needs of hardworking Californians who need lower health care costs, debt free higher education, access to affordable housing and strong civil rights protections.”

“John Laird shares my passion for making healthcare more accessible and more affordable for all Californians,” said Eshoo. “To succeed requires courage and strong partnership between the federal and state levels of government. John’s extensive record proves he has the know-how to make these goals a reality.”
