Vegetation management project planned near Lake Nacimiento
Residents may see smoke during daytime burn operations
– A prescribed pile burn is planned in the Heritage Ranch area near Lake Nacimiento as part of an ongoing effort to reduce wildfire risk, according to the Cal Fire San Luis Obispo Unit.
The burn is part of the Heritage Ranch Fuel Break Project and is scheduled to begin Feb. 3 and may continue through Feb. 5, weather and conditions permitting. Burn operations are expected to take place daily between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
During burn operations, residents in and around Heritage Ranch and the Lake Nacimiento area may see smoke in the vicinity.
The prescribed burn is intended to manage vegetation and reduce excess fuel loading in the area. Fire officials said prescribed fire supports fire management goals by reducing wildfire risk, improving rangeland production, and promoting a more diverse and resilient vegetation structure.
The project will take place on private property and will involve two hand crews and two fire engines. Cal Fire San Luis Obispo Unit is coordinating with the Air Pollution Control District to ensure the burn is conducted safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.
Smoke impacts are expected to be temporary. Fire officials said the burn will only proceed when weather conditions allow for adequate smoke dispersion to minimize impacts to the public.
Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly and limit outdoor activity if smoke becomes noticeable. Those with respiratory sensitivities are advised to take appropriate precautions.
Fire officials said prescribed fire is a critical tool used to reduce the intensity of future wildfires and improve overall public safety while supporting healthy ecosystems.
