Vietnam veteran welcomed to Atascadero with a new car

–A Vietnam-era Air Force veteran who recently moved to Atascadero to be with family will be given a warm community welcome along with a set of keys to a practically brand-new car as a thank you for his service to our country.

The car donation is from Caliber Collision and Allstate in partnership with the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program which repairs and donates cars to help individuals and families rebuild their lives.

John Stevens relocated to Atascadero last Fall. A competitive rental housing market and limited employment opportunities in a small town has made finances tight for this veteran.

Stevens finds himself in a “catch-22” situation where without full-time employment, he cannot afford a car, but with lack of reliable transportation, he is unable to seek job opportunities in neighboring towns. He currently relies on a neighbor for rides to a part-time job.

Stevens will be presented with a 2014 Toyota Prius donated by Allstate and refurbished by associates at Caliber Collision-Atascadero who volunteered personal time to restore the vehicle. A few local businesses also contributed parts, materials, services for the vehicle, as well as gifts and certificates for Stevens. Allstate agent Bryan Butler will be on hand to present the vehicle with the Caliber-Atascadero team.

The community at large is invited to attend the Recycled Rides presentation and celebration to welcome Stevens to Atascadero.

Stevens was nominated for the Recycled Rides program by Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (CAPSLO), a nonprofit agency that empowers individuals and families to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
