‘The Wall That Heals’ memorial exhibit coming to San Luis Obispo

– A memorial exhibit, bearing the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam, is returning to San Luis Obispo for the first time in 21 years for just four days this spring.

The County of San Luis Obispo Veterans Services Office will host The Wall That Heals, a scaled replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, in San Luis Obispo from March 29 to April 1 at the Madonna Meadows.

“We are honored to have been chosen to host The Wall That Heals,” said Veterans Service Officer Christopher Lopez. “Most Vietnam veterans never received a ‘welcome home.’ We hope that this will be a healing experience for our local Vietnam veterans, their families, and for our entire community. It is an opportunity to honor those who have served or are serving in our nation’s military while educating a new generation about how the conflict in Vietnam impacted our community.”

The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day, free to the public, between 12 a.m. on March 29 and 2 p.m. on April 1. This project is funded by public donations and the site was donated by Madonna Inn free of charge.

The Wall That Heals is provided by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the non-profit organization that founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. The County of San Luis Obispo Veterans Services Office applied to host The Wall That Heals in May 2017 and was one of 38 applicants approved to host the exhibit from a pool of over 100 applications. The exhibit consists of the replica Memorial, mobile Education Center, and information tent.
