Watch: Steel girders being fabricated for new bridge on Highway 1

– Steel plate girders are currently being fabricated for the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 in Monterey County near Big Sur.

The XKT Engineering Plant on Mare Island in Vallejo is where the large steel plate girders are being fabricated for the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 in Monterey County. The bridge sustained irreparable damage during this past winter’s storms. In this video, we explain how these bridge parts are made.  Once fabrication is complete, the girders will be trucked to Stockton, CA where they will be painted then transported to Pfeiffer Canyon to be assembled on-site across the 310-foot expanse.

Public access for this new single-span steel girder bridge is scheduled for late September 2017. Once complete, this structure will once again connect the Big Sur community to the Monterey/Carmel areas to the north.
