‘We are Younger Now’ exhibit showing at Cuesta art gallery

–Starting March 7, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College will be home to an art exhibit entitled We are Younger Now by Cal Poly faculty member Elizabeth Folk.

We are Younger Now investigates themes of privilege and power by attempting to defamiliarize modern design and visual images. The exhibition features sculpture, video, a performative marine vessel, home décor, and landscape design.

“Most recently, my research is focused on the resurgence of public shaming in social media and the resultant democratization of justice,” said Folk. “Internet ‘takedown culture,’ the discourse of controversy, as well as the Truth and Reconciliation movement and other modalities of conflict resolution applied to conflicts where much of the interface is social media. My recent gallery works take the form of large-scale interactive installations, object-based video installations, games, collaborations with community members, workshops, and brown bag meetings.”

Elizabeth Folk’s creative practice is situated in sculpture and time-based media with empathy and social justice as main points of emphasis. Folk earned her BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and her MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Cal Poly. We are Younger Now will run through April 5. An opening reception will take place March 7 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an Artist Talk at 5:30 p.m. in room 6304.
