Wilshire Community Services hosting workshop on aging

Wilshire Community Services is offering a two-day comprehensive workshop on aging, with professionals who work directly with older adults in multiple disciplines and fields of work. This workshop is geared towards an individual that would like continuing education in the field of aging and counseling, and completes the “fundamentals” for those who would like to move on to the advanced seminars to become a senior peer counselor (must be 55+ years old). Thursday and Friday, March 8 and 9, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. (Breakfast and lunch will be provided), Wilshire Community Services, 285 South Street Suite J, in San Luis Obispo.

Interested in also becoming a Senior Peer Counselor? Wilshire Community Services trains volunteers age 55+ to provide free in-home supportive counseling to seniors. Peer Counselors offer skilled listening and guidance to help older adults navigate the ups and downs of aging. Counselors are trained to provide quality services that have been shown to improve the quality of life of older adults and support their independence as they face various life circumstances.

Volunteers benefit from a free specialized advanced seminar series, mileage reimbursement, weekly professional supervision, on-going training opportunities, and enjoy camaraderie with fellow Counselors.

Wilshire Community Services support individuals and families throughout San Luis Obispo County who are facing challenging circumstances and difficult life transitions. The Senior Peer Counseling Program trains volunteers over the age of 55 to provide in-home counseling to seniors age 60 and older. The program is designed for seniors who are at a crossroad in their lives and need a caring, non-judgmental person to talk to as they navigate the challenges of grief, loss, depression and other life changes.

The main goal of the Senior Peer Counseling Program is to help seniors adjust to major life transitions, offer support and improve their quality of life. In addition to weekly counseling sessions, Senior Peer Counselors are also able to expand the support system for clients by connecting them with other available community resources. This one-of-a-kind program has been operating in San Luis Obispo County under various non-profit agencies since 1992. It became a member of the Wilshire Community Services in 2003.
