Wine Column: On the road with Copia Vineyards

    – On Feb. 1, Anita and Varinder Sahi hit the road for Southern California to pour at an in-home wine event at one of Copia’s SoCal wine fans.

Thirty people attended to taste Copia’s wines and have one-on-one conversations with the winery’s principals, to learn not only about their wines but also about Copia’s unique story and how they “got to” where they are today. It’s a story of family, commitment, love, and taking a leap of faith.

Attendees consisted of friends of the host: some familiar with Paso Robles, some familiar with Copia, and others who were introduced to Copia for the first time and to Paso’s magic juice.

The evening kicked off as guests arrived, being poured a splash of Copia’s Rose (an aromatic, delicate grenache and mourvèdre blend) as informal introductions were made.

Once everyone had arrived, the evening started. Anita and Varinder give a brief history of themselves and how they “found” wine after successful careers in different industries. Their love affair with Paso and Paso wines was obvious as Anita poured and discussed each selection. Afterwards, she and Varinder socialized with the guests—occasionally “dinging” their glasses so they could pour and talk about the next wine.

One of the great advantages of intimate in-home tastings is the opportunity to sit and chat with guests, answer questions, and get close and personal over several hours.

The evening tastings included the aforementioned Rose, plus their current, highly rated, award-winning releases:

    • 2024 White (a blend of roussanne, viognier, and picpoul blanc (93-Jeb Dunnuck)
    • The Anchor (100% mourvèdre) (94 Jeb Dunnuck)
    • 2022 The Cure (syrah, grenache, mourvèdre) (95-Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
    • 2022 The Source (syrah) (96-Jeb Dunnuck)
    • 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (96-Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

Food was abundant, with small bites served throughout the evening, and everyone was free to pair as they wished! Whether it was a cheesy appetizer, caviar-topped kettle chips, sushi, or sampling various meats and cheeses from the artistic charcuterie board, everyone had a fantastic time.

The pleasant spring-like evening offered guests the opportunity to sip, eat, and socialize outside, with Anita and Varinder available to everyone throughout the evening.

Visiting Copia’s Paso Robles tasting room is memorable, but meeting Anita and Varinder in a small group makes for an exceptional 100-point experience—just like this evening.
