Wine column: Tasting at Grosso Kresser Vineyard, the ‘new kid on the block’

– It’s always exciting to discover new wines and a new place to taste them, which is exactly what I experienced on a recent overnight trip through Paso Robles.
Grosso Kresser Vineyard, on Vineyard Drive, is a new discovery for me. Although its initial vintage was in 2012, this small production winery opened its tasting room in May 2024. However, the vineyard’s history dates back to the 1970s, when Gary Eberle (AKA ‘The Godfather of Paso Robles’) originally planted it. Therefore, it should be no surprise that the winery focuses on growing Bordeaux varietals, specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tastings are special
When you visit Grosso Kresser, you will be in for a treat. I don’t know many wineries where you will experience an assortment of library wines, yet that is what you will enjoy at this winery. All reds are aged at least three years and then spend another year in the bottle. Already well-aged, the wines have leveled out and show their true potential.
You may taste inside the welcoming tasting room or, depending on the weather and the season, relax on the patio with vineyards surrounding you.
Sip and take in the pastoral beauty.
The tasting menu will change seasonally (with occasional unique wines included). The day we tasted, among the wines our host (and winemaker) Jac Jacobs poured were:
- 2017 Estate Zinfandel
- 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2016 Candere (an intriguing Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Verdot)
In addition to the current plantings, the winery has recently planted grüner veltliner, vermentino, sangiovese, cabernet franc, and petit verdot (you’ll have to wait a while for these, but what fun to look forward to).
A unique tasting to be offered during the new year will be a special Library Flight, with wines dating back to 2012; I can’t wait to try this! Grosso Kresser is the definition of a classy “boutique” winery, and if you want to purchase their wines, they are only available through the tasting room or wine club.
A fun fact: Note the labels, designating: color, aromas, flavor profile, and number of cases produced.
For the ultimate wine country experience (membership has its privileges), club members should check out the Grosso Kresser vacation rental. Ideal
for up to six people, this elegant pool home overlooks the vineyards and boasts every amenity to make your stay memorable.
Visit this newly opened tasting room on your next Paso Robles adventure.
Enjoy elegant, small-production estate wines in a beautiful setting with the warmest of welcomes by Jac Jacobs, Kennedy (estate ambassador), plus Oden, Strider, and sometimes Stella, the on-site winery dogs.
What fun to discover new wines and people! Cheers!
