Winery named ‘Small Producer of the Year’ at competition

General Manager Nichole Healey-Finn, and Winemaker / Viticulturist Lukas Finn.

Bella Luna Estate Winery has been producing wines for 26 years

Bella Luna Estate Winery made a notable impression at the 21st annual Critics Challenge, held at the end of June. This competition is known for its unique judging process, conducted exclusively by professional wine reviewers who are not involved in the buying or selling side of the wine trade. All wines were tasted blind, and those earning high awards were re-tasted blind, reviewed, and scored again to ensure accuracy and fairness.

Bella Luna Estate Winery, a family-owned and operated winery founded in 1998 by Atascadero natives Kevin Healey and Sherman Smoot, received three Platinum medals at this year’s event. Additionally, Bella Luna was honored with the title of “Small Producer of the Year.”

Specializing in Italian varietals and practicing dry farming, Bella Luna Estate Winery has been producing wines for 26 years. This is the first time they have been recognized with such top honors from a competition.

“We are incredibly proud and humbled by this recognition,” said Kevin Healey, co-founder of Bella Luna Estate Winery. “It is a true testament to our commitment to quality and our passion for winemaking.”Winemaker Viticulturist Lukas Finn

Bella Luna Estate Winery’s Never Idle Vineyard Tempranillo “Tempestuous” 2022 ($50) received a score of 96 from Michael Franz. It features black cherry and blackberry as the lead fruit notes.

Bella Luna Estate Winery’s Carly’s Vineyard Estate Riserva Red Blend 2020 ($58), a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese, received a score of 94 from Michael Franz.

Bella Luna Estate Winery’s Oliver’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2023 ($45) received a score of 95 from Michael Franz. It features tropical fruit notes, including pineapple, along with ripe apple and peach.
