Youth Fishing Derby happening at Ft. Hunter Liggett April 13
–Fort Hunter Liggett will host the annual Youth Fishing Derby April 13 at Del Venturi Pond, to celebrate the Month of the Military Child. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., youth fishing begins at 7:30 a.m., and the derby ends at noon. Children ages 15 and younger from the local community as well as FHL are invited.
“My intent is to provide a safe fun-filled morning celebrating the Month of the Military Child and catching rainbow trout at the 17th Annual FHL Fishing Derby,” said Garrison Commander Col. Kerry Norman. “This event will provide a sense of family unity for the children of DA Civilians, Soldiers and Civilian workforce employees on Fort Hunter Liggett.”
Hosted by the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), the event drew 238 children last year. Burgers, hot dogs and sodas will be available for purchase (cash only, no credit cards). FMWR will provide fishing poles for up to 100 youth and a limited amount of bait. Participants are encouraged to bring the bait of their choice.
Each child will be allowed to catch up to five fish without a fishing
permit. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The
fishing derby will be held rain or shine. When the derby ends, the pond will be open for everyone who has a California fishing license.
Directional signs will be posted on the main roads, and if the water
crossing on Del Venturi Road is closed, the pond can be accessed over the green bridge onto Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. From there, make a sharp right on Vasquez Road, then a left onto Del Venturi.
