Youth fishing derby to be held at Fort Hunter Ligget

– Fort Hunter Liggett will host the annual Youth Fishing Derby April 14 at Del Venturi Pond, to celebrate the Army Reserve 110th birthday and the Month of the Military Child. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the derby ends at noon. Children age 15 and younger from the local community, as well as from Fort Hunter Ligget, are invited.

“My Intent is to provide a safe fun-filled morning celebrating the U.S. Army Reserve Birthday and catching rainbow trout at the 16th Annual FHL Fishing Derby,” said Garrison Commander Col. Kerry Norman. “This event will provide a sense of family unity for Soldier’s and the Civilian workforce’s children on Fort Hunter Liggett.”

Hosted by the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), the event drew 236 children last year, and sponsors are providing a free BBQ for the participants. FMWR will provide fishing poles for up to 150 youth and a limited amount of bait. Participants are encouraged to bring the bait of their choice.

Each child will be allowed to catch up to five fish. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The fishing derby will be held rain or shine.
