–If you’ve just got a new dog, congratulations! Perhaps this is something you’ve been pondering for a while, or maybe this is a senior rescue dog that charmed their way into your heart. Whatever the case, there are a few things you are going to have on hand to ensure that your new arrival settles in well to their new home. Here is our list of essential items that will help make your life as a dog owner a little bit easier:

Dog Food

Your dog is going to need to eat well if they want to grow big and strong. However, the decision on what to feed them isn’t always straightforward, especially for a novice dog owner. From wet food to kibble, the choices may seem endless when you are standing in the middle of the pet shop. Some dog owners will even go the extra mile and create home made meals for their dog. It is always a good idea to start by speaking with the breeder or a vet to learn more about the dog’s current diet. Any sudden changes can be troublesome for a dog’s digestive system, so do your research carefully. If you remain unsure, it’s wise to go with an established brand such as Earthborn Holistic and see how your dog takes to it.

Food and Water Bowls

Now you’ve know what to feed your dog, they’re going to need something to eat out of. They’ll also need to stay well-hydrated. When buying bowls, it is wise to go for something durable. Stainless steel comes highly recommended, as the material is strong, easy to clean, and will last you a lifetime. If you are the type of owner that enjoys getting out and about with your dog, try to find a collapsible dog bowl that is easy to transport.

A Leash

Dogs love going on walks, and it is important that yours gets its daily dose of exercise. Purchasing a good-quality leash that either clips onto the dog’s collar or harness will allow you to keep your precious pup close and keep it out of trouble. A leash is also an important training tool.

A Collar With a Tag

There are always some dogs that like to go for a wander when you aren’t looking. Ensuring they have a collar and tag on will allow others to identify the dog and return it to you. Be sure to have your dog’s name and your phone number easily visible, so if they do go missing, you increase your chances of being reunited without too much fuss. It is also a good idea to have your dog microchipped.

Poop Bags

It might take a little getting used to, but as a responsible dog owner, you’ll need to clean up after your pup when it does its business. When the call of nature does occur, you’ll have to have a supply of poop bags on hand.

Becoming a dog owner will bring endless joy to your life, and there is no doubt that your furry friend will provide you with plenty of fun, adventure, love and cuddles. However, it won’t always be smooth sailing so be prepared for a few challenges along the way. We hope that our list of essential items will help you get started.
