Auto thefts on the rise in Paso Robles

    – Auto theft in Paso Robles has risen dramatically as compared to the same time frame last year, according to Paso Robles Police Lieutenant Ty Lewis. “Over the past 40 days or so, we’ve had 10 vehicle thefts in the city and approximately 45 since January,” said Lewis. “I looked at last year’s numbers, between January and August, and noted we had approximately 24 auto thefts.”

Citizens have noted the sudden increase. North County resident Stephanie Cantrell alerted the Paso Robles Daily News: “Wanted to make you aware of a string of car thefts in Paso the past couple of days, including mine. I have been told it is up to five including a truck with trailer at tractor supply.”

Lewis said that the city’s detective bureau has been working with the county auto-theft task force due to the increased numbers. He said that many of the stolen cars are recovered outside of the city.

“We had a car recovered in Nipomo last night…we recovered a stolen truck and arrested a suspect within the last week. However, we cannot say whether any of these crimes are related,” Lewis said.

The police are looking for assistance from the community to help solve these crimes. Anyone with information regarding auto theft or any other crime committed is encouraged to call (805) 237-6464, or if they wish to remain anonymous they can provide information through Crime Stoppers 24-hour hotline at 549-STOP or by texting “SLOTIPS” plus the message to CRIMES (274637).

Thank you so much for making the public aware of this growing problem. My car was actually the one recovered in Nipomo. No damages, just a stolen stereo system.
