–Visitors to The Piccolo, the newest boutique hotel in downtown Paso Robles, will find Native Bouquet, a modern 86’ x 12’ mural that showcases 42 native plants growing in the area long before a city existed. Located in the hotel courtyard, the large-scale art piece is the handiwork of Southern California-based creative studio LC Studio Tutto.

“Our artwork integrates site-specific nature with the aim of sparking a moment of curiosity and connection with our surroundings,” says Hennessy Christophel, a San Luis Obispo County native and one half of the LC Studio Tutto team. “Native Bouquet is full of plant species I’ve identified on hikes through the grasslands and oak woodlands in the area. For those who are visiting and know the area for its cultivated plants, grapes and olives, this provides another perspective on what makes this a special destination.”

Some of the dozens of plant species depicted include: toyon, coffee fern, snowberry, California fuschia, chaparral clematis, California peony, and maidenhair fern.

To create depth and visual interest, the artists used a mix of painting styles from sheer and watercolor-like, to graphic and opaque. Some of the largest leaves—belonging to the creek dogwood—were created with a sheer glaze applied with a broom, whereas delicate grasses were painted with the team’s smallest brushes.

“Paso Robles encompasses both a fresh vitality and a rich history, which The Piccolo perfectly reflects. Native Bouquet seeks to strike this same balance,” says Sofia Lacin, the other half of the design team. “The timelessness of nature presented in a fresh visual style is the perfect fit for this modern hotel in a history-rich town. The artwork is light-hearted with pops of playful color, presented in a graceful open composition for visitors to enjoy.”
