Writers wanted for local news and features in Paso Robles
Access Publishing, owner and operator of the Paso Robles Daily News, is looking for local writers interested in writing news and press releases for clients and be published in this newspaper. Paso Robles Daily News was recently ranked the No. 1 local news source by Feedspot, an international news aggregator.
“With the COVID-19 crisis upon us, we have experienced an increase in readership and demand for local news,” says publisher Scott Brennan. “With 6,200 daily news subscribers and over 600,000 monthly pageviews, interest in local news has never been higher,” he says. “Thanks to continued support from advertisers and new advertisers looking to reach our community during this time, we are expanding our local coverage even more,” he says.
Here are examples of articles sought:
- Breaking news in North San Luis Obispo County
- Local features on people and places
- Businesses adapting to COVID-19
- Current event coverage
- Reports from government and organization meetings
- Stories not being covered anywhere else
- Press releases for local companies
If an applicant can write well and meet deadlines, no prior experience is needed. “We are looking for writers who can start with the most important facts first and move down to less important ones, just like national stories you would read in USA Today, the Associated Press, or Reuters news service, but with a local angle,” Brennan says. “Be sure you cover all of the ‘who, what, where, when, why, and how’, and include contact information for any person or company mentioned or quoted, so the information may be confirmed.” News stories are typically at least 400 words and need to include a photo. Access Publishing strives to follow Associated Press style guidelines for news writing. Contributed stories need to be 100-percent original and cannot be copied from submitted press releases or other online content.
The Paso Robles Daily News is a community-wide effort with more than a dozen current contributors, columnists, reporters, and editors. “Come join our growing team,” Brennan says. “Our goal is to continue to be the most comprehensive local news source for breaking news, events, politics, crime, sports, wine, regional, and business reports.”
Correspondents and assignment writers are paid per article. Full-time and part-time writing positions are also currently available.
