The tragic death of Todd Pinion and the subsequent murder trial was our top-viewed story of the year.
Todd Pinion, a 34-year-old Atascadero man, was reported missing on Oct. 23, sparking a search after his dog was found deceased near Cuesta Grade. Tragically, Pinion’s body was discovered on Nov. 4 in a remote area, confirming fears of foul play.
Authorities arrested 21-year-old Tyler Grant Stevens of Paso Robles, who now faces charges of murder and animal cruelty, with a hate crime enhancement alleging the killing was motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation.
40 dead cats found in Paso Robles apartment
San Luis Obispo County Animal Services investigated the discovery of 40 dead cats in an apartment at the Presidio Apartments on Chestnut Street in Paso Robles. Following accusations tied to the incident, the property manager, Laurie Bryant, responded to the allegations and later resigned from a local newsgroup.
The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney considered filing felony charges related to animal cruelty under Penal Code 597(b). Disturbing photos and graphic details from the apartment were shared by a member of the clean up crew.
Man injured in bar parking lot fight dies
A 30-year-old man, identified as Lucky Thomas of Atascadero, died from injuries sustained during a parking lot altercation outside Outlaws Bar on East Front Street. The incident occurred in the early hours of Nov. 24, when Thomas was found unconscious with a severe head injury and transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. According to police, the injury happened as a third party intervened in a fight.
Woman jumps from Del Rio Road highway overcrossing
A 36-year-old woman died after jumping from the Del Rio Road overcrossing onto the northbound lanes of Highway 101 in Atascadero in May. The California Highway Patrol and Atascadero Police Department responded to the incident, which is being investigated as a suicide. Traffic on Highway 101 was temporarily closed for about an hour and a half while authorities conducted their investigation. The woman’s identity was never released.

New bookmobile expands services for Paso Robles community
The Paso Robles City Library accepted its first bookmobile, a Ford Transit 350 van, gifted by the Paso Robles Library Foundation and Friends of the Library. The van, valued at $74,735, will be retrofitted with an accessible lift, shelving, and a mobile book collection, funded by the foundation and Friends group.
The bookmobile will expand outreach, offering mobile services, school visits, and free programs. Retrofits are underway, with plans to launch service by the summer reading program.
Construction underway on new high school swimming pool
Construction of the new Paso Robles High School aquatic facility is finally underway, with large-scale site digging beginning recently. The project, approved by the school board in February 2024, is expected to be completed in November 2025. The facility will feature a 40-meter pool located near the tennis courts and aims to expand access to aquatic programs for all students in the district. Local company Harris Construction is leading the project, which has been in planning since 2016.
Elementary school unveils new inclusive playground
The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 8, to officially open the new fully inclusive playground at Virginia Peterson Elementary School.
New workforce kitchen program expands job training for ECHO clients
Must! Charities and El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) have launched a $403,000 Workforce Development Kitchen Program to provide culinary training for ECHO clients and create a sustainable social enterprise. The program will equip participants with skills for employment in the growing leisure and hospitality sector, addressing projected labor needs in San Luis Obispo County.
2024 was an election year, and a new set of leaders will help guide the city in the new year:
Final election results released for Paso Robles
San Luis Obispo County certified the final election results for the Nov. 5 general election on Dec. 3, confirming winners in Paso Robles city and school board races. Kris Beal won the District 1 City Council seat with 43.82% of the vote, while Steve Gregory secured District 3 with 43.49%. Fred L. Strong ran unopposed in District 4.
In the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District elections, Nathan Williams, Laurene D. McCoy, Leo Castillo, and Kenney Enney won their respective trustee areas.
Measure I-24, a proposed transactions and use tax, passed with 54.42% of voters in favor.
